From Darkness to Light: Holy Family Catholic Hospital and Cure Blindness Project Restore Hope Through Life-Changing Eye Surgeries

Sight is one of life's greatest gifts. It allows us to work, care for our families, recognise familiar faces, and enjoy the world around us. When vision is lost, everyday activities become difficult, often affecting a person's confidence, independence, and quality of life. Restoring sight therefore goes beyond treating an eye condition—it restores hope and opens the door to a better future.

From 22nd to 26th June 2026, Holy Family Catholic Hospital, Techiman, in collaboration with the Cure Blindness Project, successfully carried out a major eye care outreach and surgical mission that brought specialist services to hundreds of people across several communities.

The outreach team visited Akumadan, Afrancho, Kintampo, Kajeji, Kwame Danso, Buipe, Techimantia, and Derma, providing comprehensive eye screening for 4,500 people. For many residents, it was their first opportunity to receive specialist eye assessment, allowing eye conditions to be identified early and appropriate treatment planned.

Following clinical evaluation, 301 patients underwent sight-restoring surgery at Holy Family Catholic Hospital during the five-day mission.

The programme was led by Dr. Osei Bonsu Agyeman, Dr. Aidan Yinbey Yiranbon, and Dr. Marian Ama Baiden, with the support of a dedicated team of ophthalmic nurses, optometrists, theatre staff, anaesthesia professionals, and other healthcare personnel whose commitment ensured the success of the mission.

The accompanying documentary captures the journey of patients from diagnosis to recovery. It offers a glimpse into the careful preparation that takes place before every procedure, the teamwork within the operating theatre, and the precision with which each surgery is performed.

Some of the most memorable moments come after surgery, when patients have their eye dressings removed and gradually realise they can see again. Their smiles, expressions of gratitude, and emotional reactions speak more powerfully than words. For many, it marked the end of months, and in some cases years, of living with poor vision.

Each successful surgery represents far more than a medical procedure. It means someone can return to work, regain independence, reconnect with loved ones, and once again enjoy the simple privilege of seeing clearly.

This mission also reflects the value of strong partnerships. Our collaboration with the Cure Blindness Project continues to expand access to quality eye care for people who might otherwise have little opportunity to receive specialist treatment. Together, we are helping to reduce avoidable blindness and improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
