Holy Family Catholic Hospital Advances Cervical Cancer Prevention in Tuobodom and Aworowa

Early detection remains the most effective strategy in the fight against cervical cancer. In line with this, Holy Family Catholic Hospital-Techiman, in partnership with Medical Support in Partnership (MSIP), successfully conducted a three-day community outreach programme providing free cervical cancer screening and education to women in the Tuobodom and Aworowa communities.
The outreach, themed  Early Detection Saves Lives, was organized by the Gynecological Unit of the hospital under the leadership of Dr. Ibrahim Soale Friko,Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The initiative aimed to reduce barriers to access, particularly for women in underserved communities, by bringing essential preventive services directly to their doorstep.
Outreach Highlights
Between January 26 and 28, 2026, the medical team screened 612 women using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and Colposcopy. In addition to clinical examinations, participants received comprehensive education on cervical cancer prevention, HPV risk factors, early symptoms, and treatment options. Out of the total number screened, 103 women tested VIA positive, 76 received immediate treatment through Thermal Coagulation (TC), and one suspected invasive case was promptly referred for advanced medical care.
Transforming Lives Through Prevention
Beyond the numbers, the outreach created meaningful impact by increasing awareness, correcting misconceptions, and reducing stigma surrounding cervical cancer screening. Many of the women were screened for the first time, highlighting the importance of community-based health education and preventive services in improving women's health outcomes across the Bono East Region.
